For as long as I can remember my happy place has been the beach. The sun, sand and salt air in my hair- there is nothing better. Brought up on the sandy shores of Cape Cod every summer, I now only get there a few times a year to visit family and friends. My husband was also a beach baby having spent his summers on Martha’s Vineyard. With that, it should come as no surprise that since moving to the mid-atlantic we were on the hunt to find a seaside spot to regularly get away to and were lucky enough to find one.
A few years ago we happened upon Saint Michaels, Maryland and its annual Oyster Festival. Oysters served every which way by local fisherman accompanied by local brews and wines are available for purchase in addition to the entry fee and located on the beautiful waterfront property of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
We’ve gone back each year for the festival and have also made it a habit to make day trips as well as extended weekend getaways. We made our first visit of the season just a couple weeks ago. Our favorite place to stay there, hands down, is The Inn at Perry Cabin. It is a bit of a splurge so we usually find some reason to celebrate when we’re staying there, but well worth it. Comfort, location, amenities, amazing food- it has it all. For us it feels like a little piece of New England tucked away on the bay which might be why we keep going back.
There are also numerous B&Bs and inns to choose from all over town. The main street, Talbot St., is lined with shops and restaurants as well as a brewery and winery. Ava’s Pizzeria & Wine Bar is a great spot for lunch or dinner (they serve far more than pizza made with local and organic ingredients). If you’re looking for something a little more upscale then you’ll want to head to 208 Talbot, but be sure you have a reservation. St. Mikes is the perfect place to stroll, bike, boat, relax and explore the bay. Summer is the most popular time to visit but we love the fall as well- less crowds, lower hotel prices, beautiful foliage along the waterfront. Whenever you choose to go I can almost assure you you’ll be planning your next visit before you even leave.
