When it comes to packing for a safari that requires taking several bush planes and limits your luggage weight to 44 pounds (20 kilograms), which includes all of your camera gear, things can get a bit tricky. Luckily for us our camps offer laundry service daily so we can pack on the lighter side outfit-wise insuring that we’ll have room for our other essentials that won’t be making their way to the wash. We’ve been advised by our safari operator, Desert & Delta, to pack only neutral colors and that it’s all about layering. Mornings and evenings will be in the 40s while the midday temp will reach the low 80s. When out in the safari vehicles dust is kicked up quite a bit and when on scouting walks the same will happen so the less visible the dust covering you the more comfortable you just might be we’re told. My planned daily white t-shirts, which I thought would simplify things, have gone out the window. With the weight restrictions and color limits in mind it is time for a little retail rehabbing before we depart. I’ve already scooped up some of these items while the others will find their way off of my packing list and into my luggage soon enough.
In addition to the clothing restrictions there are obvious restrictions when it comes to toiletries and what will fit both size-wise and weight-wise. Below are some of my travel size go-to items that I never leave home without.
I want to start packing today I’m so excited. How am I supposed to keep it together when I have all of this to look forward to? Lots of work to get done in the next two weeks before we depart so it’s time to settle down, focus and get er’ done so that I can enjoy our adventure without any distractions.
